Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary on May 23, 1915: the front unfolded in north-eastern Italy, from the Alpine borders to the Carso region into south west Slovenia. In the first phase of the confrontation, the Italian forces launched a series of massive offensives against the Austro-Hungarian army while minor attacks took place on the Dolomite mountains. The conflict turned into a trench warfare, similar to the war fought in Europe on the western front: several battles near the Isonzo river caused very high Italians losses (42 000 dead in only one battle). The Austro-Hungarian forces did limited counterattacks, except for the massive offensive on the Asiago plateau where they were blocked by the Italians in May-June 1916.
