The plane used by Ferruccio Marzari is an S.V.A., a biplane designed by Umberto Savoia and Rodolfo Verduzio, produced by the Ansaldo company.
During the period of Italian neutrality, the other countries involved in the conflict strengthen aviation.
On 7 January 1915 the Military Air Force was created. Ansaldo S.V.A. reconnaissance and bombing biplanes, developed in the second phase of the First World War. They will be used by 11 countries, including France and the United States, and around 2,000 were built. The designers use a 220 HP in-line SPA engine to create a fighter aircraft with superior performance to contemporary aircraft; in fact, the plane was much faster than the main Italian fighters, leading them up to 40 km / h. It was also faster than the Austrian fighters, but unfortunately unwieldy. For this reason the aircraft was adapted to the role of reconnaissance and light bomber.
