The soldier’s military uniform during the First World War

Typology: Photo

Description: the photo represents Angelo Carraro, a young boy from Vicenza only eighteen years old, who wears the Italian uniform to fight the war. This photo was taken in 1917, when young Italians born in 1899 were called to arms, after the defeat suffered in Caporetto by the Austrians on 24th October 1917.
The uniform consists of:

THE UNIFORM
The jacket is in grey-green cloth, with insignia on the collar that identify the regiment which it belongs to, long trousers in grey-green cloth with laces below the knee, which the peg bands arrived on.
On the jacket, reinforcing the upper level of the shoulders, there are shoulder pads also called “salamini or sausages” where the company number is printed with white embroidery on a black square.

THE CAP
It is in waterproof grey-green cloth with a decoration that distinguishes the different regiments.

BOOTS
They are spiked with high knee-highs. Originally in natural leather, they are darkened with grease and black gloss.

In addition to these elements, also visible in the photo, the soldiers’ uniforms also consisted of helmet, haversack, backpack and spade.

The photo belongs to my family. Angelo Carraro is my great-grandfather. Unfortunately, time and various changes of position have ruined it: it has some folds and the lower left corner is missing.

Tipologia: Foto
