TRNIO

TRNIO enables you to use your smartphone/tablet to create a 3D scan of an object. The app takes a series of photos then automatically stitches them together into a 3D model. You can find a family heirloom or a museum object from the World Wars, then create a virtual copy to share on WorldWars.eu. Unfortunately, the app is no longer free and is only available for iOS.
First, put your object on a table and ensure there is good lighting and that there is space for you to move around the object 360 degrees (you cannot rotate the object, you must move around it).
There are three ways to use TRNIO – Object, ARkit, or photo upload:

OBJECT (this will work on all devices)

  • Open the app and click ‘+’ to create a new scan
  • Select ‘OBJECT’ at the top to scan an object.
  • Hold your phone/tablet so that the object is in the middle of the camera view and almost fills it (portrait view); an angle of 45 degrees usually works well but you should experiment with each object
  • Click the small circle at the bottom to start taking photos
  • Move around the object in a circle, pausing so the app can automatically take each photo
  • You will see green shapes and a line to show where the photos have been taken
  • Check the green circle at the bottom to see when you have gone completely around the object
  • Lower your phone/tablet to eye-level view and move around the object again to get a better scan
  • When complete, click the green square at the bottom to stop
  • In the pop-up ‘Create scan from images?’, click ‘YES’
  • The app will then upload the images and stich them together. This can take 10 minutes or more, depending on the number of photos.
  • When ready, your 3D object will appear on screen.

ARKIT (for iPhone 6 or later)

  • Open the app and click ‘+’ to create a new scan
  • Select ‘ARKIT’ at the top to scan an object.
  • Hold your phone/tablet so that the object fills the view (portrait mode), start at a 45 degree angle
  • Move around the object 360 degrees. You will see green dots appear on the object.
  • Change the angle of the phone/tablet to eye-level and move around the object again
  • You hold the phone/tablet almost above the object and move around again. Capture as many angles as possible, the app will tell you when it has enough photos
  • Click ‘YES’ to automatically create your model.
  • It can take 10 minutes or more to create model.

Photo Upload

  • Use the normal camera on your phone/tablet to take photos, in a similar process to above.
  • Take a photo approximately every 5 degrees
  • Take photos from different angles.
  • Open the app and click ‘+’ to create a new scan
  • Select ‘Photos’ icon in the top left
  • Choose the photos of that object.
  • Your photos will be uploaded and automatically stitched together.

How do I share the artefact?

There are two ways to share your 3D scan to WorldWars.eu:

Another option is to share a link directly from the app.

  • Open your model in the app
  • Tap the Share icon in the top left
  • Select ‘TRNIO Weblink’ then either copy to your clipboard or send the link to your email
  • Paste the link into the artefact on WorldWars.eu
