Global historical context
It was written in 1928 during the period of the fascist dictatorship in Italy. The dictatorship became even tougher after the abolition of the party-political pluralism: the task of choosing candidates for the Chamber of the Deputies was assigned to the Grand Council that acquired the task of intervening in the succession to the throne too.
This was only partially offset by the social and welfare policy of the regime. In 1928, for example, the Istituto di Credito Navale was created to sustain the shipbuilding industry
Personal historical context Gino Mantovan was Major Corporal since May 1914.(VIDEO/ READING 3 bis +PHOTO 3)He worked as an aide in the main military hospital in Palermo for training and as a field nurse in the 6th and in the 149th Infantry.(PHOTO 3 ter) He served in Palmanova and in the battle of Nervesa where his closest comrades died.(VIDEO/READING 4bis+PHOTO 4) He went home on leave only for 15 days. Then he was on duty at the hospitals in Monfalcone and Cervignano del Friuli.
After the 24th May 1915 Cervignano(PHOTO 5)
became a “small capital” of the war in fact there were 53 Italian military sites which made it a logistic and strategic hub for the distribution of goods, vehicles and men towards the front line of the Carso. The elementary school hosted the field hospital n. 037 with 150 beds
(PHOTO 6 hospital)
More beds were set up in private buildings or factories
such as the pasta factory “ Mulinaris” with 400 beds. Outside Cervignano there were also 4 field hospitals so most of the people wounded were taken there.
Since July 1915 Cervignano was a target of heavy aerial bombardments because of its important military role and Mantovan witnessed several enemy air attacks throughout February 1916. Those were days of death and terror because of continuous bombings and cannonades . (VIDEO+READING 7 bis PHOTO 7)
On the 16th May 1917 a bombardment caused 16 dead in Nervesa and a lot of injured people. The enemy breakthrough in Caporetto made the Italian troops leave the town so the Austro –Hungarians entered the town without resistance on the 29th . In June 1918, the forces of the British and American Allies and a new Italian general Armando Diaz, led a counter-offensive and in the battle of Vittorio Veneto the Austro-Hungarian forces were definitively defeated. Finally the Italian troops returned to Cervignano on the 4th November 1918 just before the armistice entered into force.

Contesto Storico Globale associato

( 3 FOTO TER )
